| a reader isabel posted a question about BLUSHES!
i cat!
i am planning to buy a new blush, to replace the Clinique Rich Pink blush that i've been using for two years, and I was wondering which brand (Nars or Laur Mercier) is better... I have fair fair skin (I may even look pale at times but not ghostly-white...heehee). I would also like to know which color/shade is best for that type of skin color (I'm the type of fair skin that doesn't darken even under excessive exposure to the sun and i don't get pink either...i hope that info helps). i have sooo many questions about make-up the space wouldn't be enough. sheesh.
thanks in advance, isabel
HI Isabel!
I'm glad you put importance in your blush, it is such an important part of makeup. It is the one makeup i believe can give your skin a healthy glow with just one swipe.
Since you've asked specifically between both brands. I'll share a bit about NARS and Laura Mercier.
Both Francois Nars and Laura Mericer are top makeup artist that have been in the industry for years and decided to form makeup lines from their experiences. The difference is that Laura focuses on makeup that enhances natural beauty (similar to Bobbi Brown), safe natural colors are her experitise. And as i have mentioned many times, her tinted mositurizer is one of the best in the industry.
Nars on the other hand, enjoys playing with color and intense pigments. This offers a wider range of colors to choose and play with.
Since I am assuming that you want a color you can use everyday. and from what i gather you are fair but not the type that turns red easily. a pink/apricot color would be ideal.
From NARS: the colors ORGASM, SIN, DEEPTHROAT, and PLAISIR will most probably be nice on you :)
from LAURA MERCIER: ALL COLORS will most probably work, but NECTAR is a nice peachy pink that might help you look like you got a little sun :)
BUT it is important to always remember that when you can try the blushes at the department store and not feel obligated to buy. brush some on (i suggest bringing your own brush to the store, to prevent spreading bacteria) and head out for some shopping or lunch and note the color in the sunlight before purchasing. You want something that will give you some color but not make you look like a clown :)
hope this helps! :) | | |
| one of our readers erika just posted some interesting questions that i thought would be great to answer. :)
hi there, i've always been looking forward to your posts here in your blog and i really find them quite interesting and helpful.well, i'm quite interested to know the price of these three holy grails you've just posted coz i have plans to buy one for myself.btw, are they all hypoallergenic coz my skin is quite sensitive...thanks! p.s. i'm also in a look out for a perfect liquid foundation (can mask my blemishes, looks natural, long-lasting, hypoallergenic) and lipstick (smooth, doesn't chip off, semi-glossy,long-lasting)can you suggest one? thanks! i'd be really happy if you could help me out... *sorry if i have too many questions coz i'm just starting to be kikay..haha!(i'm already turning 20)
hi erika!
congratulations on turning 20! the 20's are a great time of your life to be in!! certainly a lot of exploring in the beauty department!
i apologise that i do not have the exact price of each of my holy grails on me, but i will tell you around how much and where you can find them :)
1. laura mercier- tinted moisturiser : 1000+ - Rustan's Essenses : best to try the 2-3 colors that the cosmetic assistant will suggest for you to best suit you over there, don't just guess from the bottle.
2. NARS -orgasm blush: 1000+- Rustan's Essenses: this blush really works so well on both fair or olive skin tones.
3. MAC-concealer: 800+: Glorietta (right across bonn appetit of rustan's), there are so many shades to choose from that you are bound to find one perfect for you. also works well for undereyes.
all three products are hypo-allergenic and i have not heard of any reaction from them.
so you're in the market for a liquid foundation. because you have told me that you have extremely sensitive skin, the two brands i would recommend for you are Clinique Perfectly Real Makeup (Rustan's Dept. Store),1500+ and Clarins True Radiance Foundation, 1500+, i would have also recommended a foundation from Prescriptives but unfortunately, they discontinued distributing it here in the country.
clinique's perfectly real makeup
When it comes to foundation, i highly recommend going for quality. BUT i am also a strong believer in not spending more than you can to look fabulous so if the brands i have recommended are not in your budget, you might also want to look into Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse Foundation (PCX, Watson's) i have heard very good things about how this foundation which is a mix of liquid and powder and feels like absolutely nothing on has great natural looking coverage. makeup artists i work with swear by it!
maybelline dream matte mousse foundation
lipsticks are always so much fun! and the great thing about lipsticks is that there are so many to choose from! these are two of my top favorites right now that are in my bag.
1. guerlain kisskiss: semi-glossy, smells so yummy, has great color without being too overpowering, and lasts for an hour or two. 1000+ (rustan's and shangrila edsa)
2. shu-uemura rouge unlimited: there are so many colors to choose from its not funny. some will go on lighter than other's. if you were planning to get a red color, this is one of the most flattering, beautiful red colors you will find. i chose a lighter peachish/pink that i choose for my everyday wear. highly moisturizing too. 1000+ (rustan's and shagri-la edsa)
once again if these lipsticks don't suit your budget. there are a lot of great drugstore brands like maybelline, revlon, and l'oreal that offer a whole range of lipsticks suited for you.
i don't suggest investing in the long wearing ones. even though the technology has gone a long way from what it used to be when i just entered my 20's, i still find them slightly drying.
good luck on your quest for beauty buys!
| everybody has their HOLY GRAIL products. products they love so much, they just can't be without them.
here are three products i have been using everyday for almost a year, because they are dependable, beautiful, and give me the look that i need! they can easily become your holy grails too.
LAURA MERCIER TINTED MOISTURIZER spf 20- its not wonder that angelina jollie and catherine zeta jones swear by this moisturizer. it gives me great medium coverage (to help hide regular blemish spots) is not greasy on the skin, lasts through half the day, and adds on additional protection. i love this moisturizer and will die if they discontinue it.
NARS ORGASM- a peachy pink shimmer blush with gold flecks that i always go back to. when i first used this blush i found it too light for my olive skin, but the color grows on you because it is so natural. it really looks as though you are naturally flushed. such a beautiful feeling.
MAC STUDIO FINISH CONCEALER- i am unfortunately prone to breakouts, so when i need to hide one or two. this is the concealer i turn to. it has spf 35 which makes it an added bonus. a not too dry not to wet texture and keeps the blemish covered with minimal touchups.
| ulg... acne. this has been my plague forever. i used to be so envious of the women who could wake up in the morning with poreless, oil free skin.
due to an unfortunate mix of heritage i was never one of those women. my mom has extremely oily skin, while my father's family has a long line of adult acne-at the tender age of 8, i already had extremely oily skin and blackheads, by the ages of 12-15. my acne was so bad that classmates from those days don't recognize me today.
one guy even wrote in my friendster testimonial "wow! is that you? where did all the pimples go"
it was so difficult to maintain clear skin that even with weekly visits to the derma nothing could be done. i would be doused with strong acids that would make my eyes tear, injected with steroids to make the large bumps flatten. it finally came to the point that i was suscribed accutane, an extremely high dose of oral vitamin A that has to be taken with close doctor supervision. it was costly, took a toll on my body, but finally worked to help manage the flair ups.
i still battle with oily skin on a daily basis. but breakouts are fewer and farther between. i now only get breakouts during certain times of the month or when i am extremely stressed. skin care products are some of my favorite to rate because i know the importance of a good skin care regimen.
the latest line of products i've encountered is from L'OREAL a line i never thought i would consider for skin care. but the PURE ZONE line is based on my favorite acne fighting ingredient salycilic acid. i've been using the cleanser, scrub, and moisturizing lotion twice a day for the last week. my skin has definitely become smoother, no peeling, no burning. and the cleanser leaves a refreshing tinge of cool on the skin.
i'll give this line 4 stars for its fast working action, no bad side effects, and no-oily moisture lotion. the last star is only because its not my miracle product just yet. i still am getting occasional white heads and the packaging is a little inconvenient to bring around.

| i've been getting some beauty questions via e-mail or post and it wouldn't help to share their answers with everyone :)
ROCELI asks..."what is a good concealer that can be used for both the undereyes and acne"
my verdict:
one of the only concealers i would trust enough to recommend would be MACSTUDIO FINISH SPF 35
PRO's: it has medium to full coverage, comes in a wide range of colors so you can be sure that you get the tone right for you (please consult the MAC counter people to be sure that you get it right, that's what their paid for!), and is SPF 35!! so not only does it hide under eye circles very well, it is water resistant and protects your skin and your blemishes from getting darker from the big, bad sun. and best of all... it is less than 1,000 pesos and will last you for a year!
CON's: it has a tendency to feather just a bit when the weather is too humid, but a little blotting should help.
